Yamunotri in Hindu Mythology is the first dham in one of the char dhams to visit in Uttarakhand. The sacred place is in DEVBHOOMI UTTARAKHAND. It is in Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand Garhwal region. The pilgramage site is considered as the source of Yamuna river which meets ganga at allahabad.
The Yamunotri temple was originally constructed by Maharaj Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The temple was constructed for the ease of devotees to perform ritual duties and other offerings to Maa Yamuna at the foothills. The actual source of Yamuna which is a glacier which is almost 14 km far ahead of the temple and the trek is extremely difficult to reach there.
With the best efforts of uttarakhand government the journey becomes very easy though it still have a trek of 6 kms in which 3 km trek is quite adventurous and difficult. But one can avail ponies, kandi and dandi to make the journey comfortable. Uttarakhand Govt. has opened their counters for these facilities. Now the motorable road is upto JankiChatti. In starting it was upto Barkot which was almost 50 km from JankiChatti. But gradually the road reaches to phool chatti, from which Jankichatti is 2 km. and in last two years the road reaches to JankiChatti. From Where the 6 km trek starts for the temple. If one wants to avail poni, palki then it is better to arrange them at jankichatti itself otherwise it will be very difficult to get them in between the route. Tea stalls, food stalls and snacks stalls are available on entire trek route but they are available at almost double the MRP(written price) which is justified at such a height.
